WATCH WATCH: LANGE 1 by A. Lange & Söhne
Unmistakable dial architecture
With its asymmetric, overlap-free displays and the characteristic outsize date, it has probably won the most awards of any watch in the past decades and has become the icon of Saxon watchmaking as defined by A. Lange & Söhne. The new LANGE 1 can be recognised by a slightly narrower bezel. It adds openness to the face of the watch despite its unchanged diameter of 38.5 millimetres. Another innovation on the dial is the instantaneously jumping outsize date that advances by one day at midnight.
The design of the LANGE 1 follows a coherent principle: the centres of the subsidiary seconds dial, the main dial and the outsize-date display are at the corners of an isosceles triangle. The proportions of the outsize-date display are harmonious as well: they respect the rule of the golden ratio.
Tradition and innovation
The numerals of the outsize date, modelled after the five-minute clock in Dresden’s Semper Opera House, are about three times larger than those of conventional mechanical wristwatches and thus excel in terms of legibility. The numerals are printed on a tens cross and a separate units disc that are both superposed with a clearance of a mere 0.15 millimetres. The date can be conveniently advanced day by day with a push piece.
72 hours power reserve
The power-reserve indicator shows the state of wind of the watch from “UP” (“AUF”) for fully wound to “DOWN” (“AB”) for fully unwound. The tandem mainspring barrels deliver a power reserve of 72 hours. The inscription “DOPPELFEDERHAUS” on the dial refers to this technical highlight.
The case of the LANGE 1 is crafted exclusively from 18-carat gold or platinum. Even the buckle engraved with the Lange signature, the embossed winding crown, the hands and the small appliques are made of these precious metals.
