IN FOCUS: LEAF XIA - THE AW17/18 COLLECTION
Originally from China, New York based Parson’s graduate Leaf Xia has quickly gained a prestigious reputation to go along with her diverse background. Not only was her graduate work exhibited in the Saks Fifth Avenue Window Display, she has been published in Vogue UK, ELLE, Grazia, Glamour, The Muse, and Schon, and named one of Fashion Scout’s Ones to Watch Designers. The brand also created a bespoke print for Magnum as part of her SS17 Collection for Shanghai Fashion week.
Specializing in collage, Xia’s collections always express a unique design spirit. This season, in her AW17 collection Hero’s Mind, Leaf delivers another bright, fun, and extremely playful series that tells an evocative and powerful story. Decidedly high quality fabrics and precisely finished garments help Leaf visually recreate the metaphoric shift from girlhood to womanhood with accessible and artful pieces that maintain their wear ability.
Volume, graphic colours, and appliqué form the majority her innovative collection. Honoring a love for collage, Xia’s creativity is once again bred through oversized shapes and bonded fabrics that inform a reimagined take on classic silhouettes. At first featuring innocent pinks, Xia’s addition of pattern creates beautiful clashes within the ensemble.
Clean block shades met with unexpected prints visualize the difficulties a girl faces in her transition to womanhood. Experimenting with colourful combinations until finding the right match, Xia illustrates the parallel journey of a young woman establishing her identity. Injecting a fresh look into the industry, Xia’s concept culminates with designs that almost contradictorily represent the soft and strong qualities of femininity. Xia continually reinforces the emotional resonance of her collection through the idea that, by reflecting upon and drawing from certain experiences, the freedom of fashion can exemplify establishing personal identity.
